What Causes Thick Toenails?

Aging

The most common cause of thick toenails is aging.

As the human gets older, the toenails will be thickened and can easily break down.

The immune system of the body slowly decreases, and it affects the other parts of the body including the fingernails and toenails.

The symptoms of the thickened toenails because of aging are the toenails become hard and develop ridges and lines.

Getting older is natural. The thick toenails because of aging cannot be cured or treated. It can only be prevented by moisturizing and buffing the toenails to make the toenails appearance more smooth.

Fungal Infection

Another common cause of the thick toenail is because of fungal infection. The fungus attaches in the vulnerable skin near the toenail. The fungus brings about the discoloration, thickness, and brittleness of the toenails. Some conditions that can make the fungus appear are the frequent exposure of the toenails to the wet areas, the weak immune system, the small footwear, and medical condition such as circulatory or respiratory problem, diabetes, or psoriasis.

Before the fungus spreads to your toenails, make sure to keep your footwear dry.

Use sterilized clipper to your toenails, do the regular cleansing to your feet and toenails by using the antibacterial soap, and do not cut your toenails too short. If your toenails suffer from fungal infection, it is better to see the doctor.

The doctor will determine the treatment to your disease like taking the oral medications or performing the lasers for killing the fungi.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is one of the major causes of the thick toenails.

Many experts and doctor have not figured out the cause of this disease, yet.

Those who suffer from psoriasis of the toenails usually have the skin psoriasis in some parts of the body.

When you have psoriasis in your toenails, you will find out some symptoms like the color changing, thickening, crumbling, and loosening of toenails.

In addition, there will be ridges on your toenails.

Before treating, it is better to do prevention. You need to keep your toenails healthy by taking care of your toenails like having your toenails cut, wearing comfortable shoes, and using nail moisturizer.

On the other hand, if your toenails suffer from psoriasis, you need to see the doctor and ask the medical cares. The medical cares can be prescribing the topical steroid drugs applied to the infected toenails, giving the corticosteroid injection, prescribing the antifungal medication, having phototherapy to the infected toenails, and having the psoriasis toenails removal surgery.

The medication will depend on how serious the infection of psoriasis is.

Stubbing Injury

Stubbing injury can cause thick toenails.

It may occur because the toenails are often injured and trauma.

Those (dancers, athletes, or soccer players) whose the toes thicken mostly get involved in doing sport or repeated exercises. In addition, the toes can be thick because the shoes are smaller than the actual size of the feet or the hammer that drops directly to the toenails. The symptoms are marked by the small spot in the nail and the discoloration of the trauma area

If your toes happen to be thick because of trauma or injuries, you need to see the doctor. The doctor will prescribe the oral medication to cure the wound in the nail bed.

Paronychia

One of the causes of thick toes is paronychia. The causes of paronychia are the constant finger sucking and trimming the cuticles. The symptoms of paronychia are the redness and swelling skin around the nail. As a result from the multiple infections because of paronychia, both fingernails and toenails will thicken, and the layer of the nail start loosening.

The Prevention/Treatment

To treat this paronychia, compress your feet with warm water and take antibiotic medication or antifungal drug. See the doctor the paronychia is getting worse.

Yellow Nail Syndrome

One of the causes of the thick toenails is yellow nail syndrome.

This yellow nail syndrome is such rare condition which can cause the discoloration and thickening of the nails.

This syndrome makes the nails especially the toenails more thickened, curved, and yellow. The causes of this syndrome are not fully known, but some people get this nail syndrome because this has run in the family.

The symptoms of yellow nail syndrome are marked with the swelling of the arms and legs and appearing of the respiratory problems.

As many doctors believe that this yellow nail syndrome appears to be genetic, the treatment is by seeing the doctor.

The doctor will have medical treatment to the swollen arms and legs or the respiratory problems.
